ABOUT MEXICO  Mexico makes its home in Middle America. The likely origin of corn (one of the world’s major grain crops) Mexico has a free market economy, including free trade agreements with over 40 countries. Of the 107 million people who live in Mexico, 92.2% are literate. Despite great advances in its education system, Mexico struggles with the retention of higher education students, particularly those from indigenous communities, the meeting of academic achievement standards, and economic issues related to illicit drugs and immigration.

The Pathways to Higher Education program in Mexico works in conjunction with the Association of Universities and Institutes of Higher Education (ANUIES) to achieve greater access to higher learning for disadvantaged students from low-income families and rural areas. ANUIES’ Pathways program currently involves 10 Mexican institutions. Since 2001, Pathways has involved a total of 14 institutions. Pathways to Higher Education programs at institutions in Mexico work to achieve greater access to higher learning for disadvantaged students from low-income families and rural areas. Through Pathways, institutions will provide quality instruction through institutional reforms that promote equity and inclusiveness in higher education to indigenous students, who are highly underrepresented in Mexican higher education, in order to better prepare them to partake in a fast paced global economy.
