Goals
The Pathways program at Lampung University strives to:
- Increase the admission and graduation rates of marginalized students
- Improve higher education admission policies or practices
- Improve student academic English and Indonesian language skills
- Improve faculty training to increase cultural inclusiveness and improve English and Indonesian instruction
Target Population
Lampung University has reached out to low-income students across Indonesia. According to the results of a survey conducted in 2005, 46% of students' families have an annual income of approximately $220 USD. Many students had to delay tuition payment, while others withdrew from the University due to a lack of funds.
Outcomes
To date, the University's Pathways program has:
- Developed two teaching modules to enhance students' academic progress. The success of these modules has inspired other universities to adopt a similar program.
- Developed academic support to help students writing theses and taking standardized English tests, which are necessary to graduate. These supports save students money, as they typically have to pay for supplemental language assistance. While Pathways students are still in their second year, graduation rates are expected to increase due to these supports.
- Trained faculty members to improve their teaching methods for marginalized students. Approximately 160 lecturers without a language background were recruited from the University's various departments and trained to teach Communicative Academic English and Academic Writing. After the training, approximately 20 lecturers teach a Basic English Course and another 20 teach Indonesian language yearly using the modules developed by the Program.
