Goals
The Pathways to Higher Education program at the Autonomous State University of Veracruz strives to improve educational availability to indigenous and rural populations and to preserve Latin American culture. To achieve this mission, the University’s Pathways program is focused on improving or developing:
- Materials for distribution to high school students in indigenous or rural areas to introduce them to the University and encourage them to apply
- An academic coaching program to support new students
- Training for tutors on multicultural awareness
Target Population
The Autonomous State University of Veracruz serves indigenous peoples from Náhuatl, Totonacas, Huastecas, Popolucas, Zapotecas, Chinantecas, Otomíes, Mazatecas, Tepehuas, Mayan and Mixe backgrounds.
Outcomes
Through the Pathways program the University has:
- Created an intercultural network connecting four rural campuses that have large indigenous populations
- Raised cultural awareness through discussion sessions with students on topics including discrimination and diversity
- Integrated the indigenous and non-indigenous sectors of the student body through cultural activities held at the University
