The Pathways to Higher Education program at Yunnan Normal University strives to improve low-income and ethnic students’ academic, leadership and professional abilities and self-confidence levels.  To achieve this mission, the University’s Pathways program seeks to provide:

  • Counseling services for Pathways students
  • A technologically advanced educational environment
  • Student-run clubs or associations for Pathways students
  • A Web site providing Pathways students with online job services and career counseling

Target Population
Ethnic and low-income students in physically remote regions

Outcomes
Through the Pathways program, Yunnan Normal University has:

  • Developed a “Student Practice Simulation Center,” where Pathways students can receive career training in a simulated environment that resembles the setting, structure and operations of an actual organization.  Numerous companies have participated in the trainings and provided additional support.
  • Improved students’ self-confidence and independence by providing counseling and related courses.
  • Supported student-run groups and associations that now serve more than 5,000 students.  In 2003, Pathways students established the Environmental Union to build students’ environmental awareness and enhance recycling and energy habits.
