Goals

The Pathways to Higher Education program at Dong Thap University strives to:

 

  • Improve disadvantaged students’ English competence, thus improving their ability to graduate
  • Improve disadvantaged students’ computer skills
  • Counsel and help disadvantaged students overcome psychological and academic problems in order to study better

Target Population

The Pathways program has helped the University reach out to ethnic minority students and Kinh students who live in remote or isolated areas.

Outcomes

To date, the Pathways program at Dong Thap University has:

·         Improved the English language skills of 150 disadvantaged students by creating materials to help students with listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and through English classes and peer tutoring

·         Improved 90 disadvantaged students’ computer skills through basic and advanced IT classes.  Forty students were enrolled in the basic level course and 50 were enrolled in the advanced level course

·         Improved the study skills of  211 disadvantaged students through the establishment of a study center and training sessions, and daily face-to-face meetings with tutors

·         Improved information technology capacity of 40 key teachers through IT workshop

·         Improved the problem solving skills of 32 disadvantaged students through the establishment of a Counseling Center
