Goals
The Pathways to Higher Education program at Dom Bosco Catholic University, Rede de Saberes (Knowledge Network) supports state level initiatives to promote higher education opportunities for indigenous people in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. To achieve this mission, the Pathways program is focused on improving or developing:

  • The University's capacity to ensure the retention of indigenous students and their participation in the academic community
  • Data on higher education for indigenous peoples in Mato Grosso do Sul

Target Population
In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, the total population is estimated to be 2,078,000 inhabitants, out of which 51,500 (2%) are indigenous people. The total enrollment number in higher education in the state is 65,336.

Outcomes
Through the Pathways program, the University:

  • Supported the creation of the first public-private joint initiative of universities on indigenous students in Brazil
  • Installed appropriate equipment (personal computers, etc.) to facilitate indigenous student activities within the universities
  • Held meetings and seminars with indigenous students to raise awareness about issues they face
